    Where is Avisail?!?!?!?

Post by Guest on Fri May 18, 2018 12:48 pm

Its been about 3 weeks now?

Never would have guessed the 2018 White Sox OF would have a combined sub 600OPS 1/4th of the way thru the season

Sox tossed his name around this offseason but obviously nobody was willing to give up what the Sox wanted for him.  Undoubtedly most teams weren't real convinced that one good season completely erases three prior years of sucking.

    Not exactly,

While it made sense for other teams to hedge Garcia’s future value due to past performance, it made little sense for the White Sox to do so.  For the White Sox, better to gamble that Garcia was for real than dump him for mediocre prospects.  Clearly Garcia had the higher star potential, which is what you want in a rebuild

BTW, 2018cant be called completely coming back to Earth.  So far, 2018 is far worse than his pre 2017 form.  Clearly a function of injury and small sample size.

Current reports have Garcia returning late June.

Meanwhile, Matt Davidson is attempting to WALK into the teams long term plans

Again folks, OUR White Sox need at least two lefty power hitters and currently have ZERO.  However, OUR White Sox appear overloaded with righty power.  That's assuming Garica is for real and Jiminez will be very soon.  Not enough room in the lineup for those two and Davidson and Abreau.  Not to mention Tim Anderson supplies righty power from the SS position.

The KARK is hoping Garcia rebounds and earns the contract extension.  So maybe its Abreau that has to go

Agree, Sox weren't going to give him away lightly after his 2017.  But Sox also (wisely) wanted to see more "good Garcia" before shelling out bigger and longer-term dollars to him.  IMO, the Sox's $ 5.5 mil arb offer showed that conservatism especially since the arbitrator agreed with Avi's $ 6.5 demand.

Yes, April is a small sample. Agree also 2018 isn't just his GB BA coming back to earth (.324 now v. 364 last yr).   His .233 BA this year comes primarily from fewer line drives and too many catchable fly balls. Even in his bad years he had more liners and non-catchable flyballs so that will resolve some.

One red flag is not so easy to overlook. He's had lousy plate discipline his whole career, though he seemed to get better 2nd half last year. For some odd reason it's gotten much worse this season (76 PAs and 0 walks).  He's swinging at more pitches out of the zone than anytime since his rookie year.   That could partly account for not enough line drives and too many catchable flyballs. Not too mention a miserable OBP.. If that doesn't improve when he's back he's the "bad Garcia" once more. His hamstring injury occurred in his last game so doubt that had anything to do with his bad April.

Current reports have Garcia returning late June. Abreu will probably be on the trade block this summer even though the Sox could hold him next year.  Garcia won't be back long enough before the trade deadline to have any trade appeal this year and unless Avi comes back like a ball of fire in the second half there will be little reason for the Sox to offer him an extension after this season.

As a Sox fan, I'd like to see Garcia hit more HR's and draw some BB's for a change.
