    Gioloto looking strong

Lucas Giolito was excellent in his Cactus League start on Tuesday against the Rangers, working 6 1/3 innings of scoreless ball.
Giolito allowed just two hits and he didn't walk a single hitter while striking out four. He now owns a sparkling 2.04 ERA in the Cactus League and has reminded onlookers why he was considered one of the best starting pitching prospects in all of baseball just a couple years ago

Wonder what happened to the AAA version of him from last year. Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Good question.  Giolito's stuff is pretty electric so when he has good command and can throw strikes, he is hard to hit.  His curveball is a very hard breaker but he didn't use it as much with Sox as he did with Nats. He went more to his changeup, sinker this last year and reduced his FB% from 70% in 2016 to 50% in 2017.  Maybe this was Cooper's influence.
I expect some rough patches this year as his ball all over the place and sometimes he falls behind which can make him prone to the HR.  But he's also capable of some real gems too.  Think it's possible the good outings will outweigh the bad even this year, and as he gains more poise and experience he could develop into one of the top 10 pitchers in the league in the years ahead.

    Mr RobZ

This is a phenomenon real SABRmaticians refer to as

    SHIT HAPPENS

    ***********************

It is the KARK's expert SABRmetiric opinion the a pitcher needs at least these 3 things to be successful: 1) Health; 2) Stuff; 3) Control

We all know Giolito has #2, I assume he has #1, If you look at the back of his baseball card, he struggles when he struggles with his control.  These incidences should decrease as he learns his craft, assuming he stays healthy in the process.

As to last year, quite simply.  He tried to hard to impress his new team.  Once he settled down, he was fine.  Simple as that.  No buyllshit math problems required
