    Minor Leaguers Sent Down

Post by rmapasad on Wed Mar 14, 2018 6:04 pm

White Sox optioned OF Daniel Palka and INF Jose Rodon to Triple-A Charlotte; optioned LHP Ian Clarkin and OF Eloy Jimenez to Double-A Birmingham; optioned OF Micker Adolfo and OF Luis Basabe to High-A Winston-Salem; reassigned RHP Dylan Cease and C Zack Collins to minor league camp.
No big surprises among this round of cuts. Palka was claimed off waivers from the Twins in November and will function as organizational outfield depth this season for the White Sox. Jimenez is one of the top prospects in baseball and has put on a show this spring in the Cactus League, but his ETA is probably late-2018 or early-2019. The 21-year-old outfielder finished the 2017 season at Double-A.  >>>

There is a logjam of Sox OFers below AAA level. For AAA, Tilson, May and Palka seem set.
For AA, Jiminez, Polo, and maybe Courtney Hawkins (sub-600 OPS there last year) and Mason Robbins (603 last year) seem possible.  Unless the Sox are just cutting Hawkins. Robbins got AB's this Spring.

Winston-Salem has a jam with Jameson Fisher, Micker Adolfo and Luis Basabe all targeted but Alex Call and Joel Booker also played there last year and they both got AB's this Spring.

Looks like Blake Rutherford starts in low A Kannapolis along with Craig Dedelow, Luis Gonzalez and Logan Taylor all of whom are prospects.  But Luis Robert was also targeted for there until his injury.

So basically the Sox have 14 OFers in AA, A+ and A for 9 starting OF jobs.  If Jiminez moves up to AAA hopefully soon that leaves room for someone of the Fisher, Adolfo, or Basabe trio to move up to AA and that in turn would allow Rutherford to move up to Advanced A.   Robert should be in Kannapolis by that time also.
Some of these guys will fall by the wayside or get hurt which will clear up part of the logjam.  But it seems to be a good problem to have as long as the prospects who are expected to do well (notably Tilson, Jiminez, Polo, Adolfo, Basabe, Rutherford, and Robert) actually perform.
