    Tilson Sent Down

Post by rmapasad on Tue Mar 06, 2018 12:25 pm

White Sox optioned OF Charlie Tilson and RHP Thyago Vieira to Triple-A Charlotte; optioned RHP José Ruiz to Class A Winston-Salem; reassigned INF Jake Burger, RHP Dylan Covey, C Alfredo González, LHP Jordan Guerrero and RHP Michael Ynoa to minor league camp.>>

Well, so much for the speculation that Tilson might win the CF job as one source did.

At least he won't on Opening Day for sure. Tilson might still end up as the starting CFer at some point provided that:
    1- he stays healthy

2- he hits decently in AAA

3- neither Engel or Leury Garcia puts a lock on the CF job.

Of those 3 possibilities, # 3 is most likely but # 1 or # 2 are crapshoots. Tilson did decently enough back in AAA in 2016 but that was a while ago and who knows how much his hamstring and foot problems have taken away from his game, which is highly dependant on speed.

    3B - Or Ryan Cordell

4 - He isn't surpassed by Tito Polo or somebody else

5 - White Sox don't trade for a CF this summer

Tilson's future as a member of OUR White Sox is not only dependent upon his own performance, but the speed of the rebuilding process.  Meaning how fast the kids turn from prospect to star.  If Avisail is for real and Moncada hits like a stud and Kopech and Rodon appear in the 2nd half looking like Koufax and Drysdale, then I would assume that's enough to put OUR White Sox in the 2019 contention picture.  If that is the case, OUR White Sox just might be looking for next winter's version of Lorenzo Cain.

On the flip side, 2018 can be a year of growing pains that leaves to many question marks for 2019.  If CF is still a question mark under this scenario, I'd expect OUR White Sox to look for a cheap internal solution.  That would put Tilson in the hunt.  Unless of course the White Sox trade for a top CF prospect that is MLB ready.

Bottom line, there are more scenarios than Carter has pills.  However, OUR White Sox are smart to farm him out and let him play everyday at AAA.  Let him get his game back.  then see where he fits in
