What's Happened to the Free Agents ?

Post by rmapasad on Thu Jan 25, 2018 4:36 pm

Must say it's unusual to see so many marque free agents unsigned at this stage.
Arrieta, Darvish, JD Martinez, Hosmer, Moustakas, Cain and Cobb..

The market may be more sane.  No more crazy Greinke-type deals where one teams' offer blows everyone else out of the water. If "semi-outrageous" deals are now the norm, more teams can jump in the fray.  FA's dancing with more bidders may be part of the holdup.

Sox obviously aren't in on this and shouldn't be.  At least this year.

Teams are starting to see the benefit of what the Sox are doing and what the Astros did...build from within.

Yeah, could be part of it.   Why tie up huge $$ years plus lose a 1st rd. pick to sign a big free agent?
[size=16]Teams who sign big FA's tend to be wanna-bes who feel pressure to win now.  But it rarely works. In last six-seven years only 2 top name free agents (Lester and Heyward) were signed by a team that ended up winning World Series. And Heyward didn't even help Cubs all that much in 2016[size=13].

OK, it's almost 3 weeks later.  Pitchers and Catchers report to camps tomorrow and the first ST training game is a week and a half from now. Yet 5 of these 7 top free agents still haven't signed with anyone.
Can't recall an offseason like this before.

Weird stuff, isn't it?  It'll be very strange to see if a couple of these guys last until midway through spring training, or even a week or two into the regular season.  Sort of like when I've waited and bought tickets from scalpers after the game or concert started, figuring on getting a better price then.

Yeah, holdouts will cave some. But for bigger-names, it's like Nieman Marcus having a sale. Instead of
totally insane-you've-got-to-be-shitting-me prices, it'll drop to just plain old crazy.   Moustakas,  Hosmer, Cobb and Arrietta may "settle" for a year or two less. JD Martinez could get "only" 100-110  mil rather than 125-130.
Some second tier bargains possible though. Morrison, Lynn, CarGo, Maybin, Nunez, Lucroy, Melky, Hellickson, Jaime Garcia, Walker, Duda.   Could see a few of these guys taking 1-2 year deals for at less annual salary than they were making before.
