Tilson

Post by rmapasad on Wed Oct 11, 2017 9:18 am

Charlie Tilson - OF - White Sox
Charlie Tilson (ankle) will play in the instructional league for the second straight day on Tuesday.  Tilson missed the entire 2017 season with a navicular stress fracture in his right foot, but he's finally getting back to normal. With the White Sox rebuilding, the 24-year-old speedster should be in the mix for an outfield spot next spring. --

Out of 6 professional seasons, Tilson has missed 2 full ones and a half of another due to injuries of one sort or another.  He's probably a better hitting version of Adam Engel but remains to be seen whether he can a) stay healthy for any length of time and b) come back to a competitive level after missing the last year and a half of baseball.

Probably a better hitter than Adam Engel?!?!?!?!?!?!?

That's the understatement of the winter!!!!!!

Engel had an OPS+ of 39!!!!

Engel is the Ron Karkovice of centerfielders!!!!!

This is the reason the KARK is eyeballing Lorenzo Cain.  Although I suspect the Cain price tag might make it a bad fit.

Willy showed virtually no range beyond catching routine fly balls in LF and CF this year, so IMO he would be a lousy choice to patrol CF.. Plus he didn't hit much either.
Sox have Leury Garcia and maybe Tilson who can try to keep that seat warm for a couple years until Luis Robert arrives.

NEVER SAID WILY IS THE NEW JOE DIMAGGIO

BUT KNOWING THE WHITE SOX, THEY WILL WANT TO PLAY WILY GARCIA AND IF NICK DELMONICO HOLDS ON TO LF, THERE IS ONLY ONE PLACE FOR WILY TO GO, AND THAT IS CF

BTW, JUST LOVE YOU IDEA OF IGNORING CF UNTIL LOU-BOB IS READY.  JUST THE OTHER DAY YOU PRACTICALLY WROTE OFF TILSON.  NOW HE'S A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE?!?!?!?

A SANE PERSON ASKS WHAT ARE LORENZO CAIN'S CONTRACT DEMANDS.  OR IS HE TOO TALL OR HAVE TOO MANY LUCKY GROUNDBALL HITS OR IS AGE 32 THE NEW 50

Wily can go back to Charlotte if he still has options left. Why does Willy need to be on this roster after hitting .238, 2 HR's in 120 pa's and subpar defense ?  Sure, he upped his BB rate in 2017 but he still strikes out too much to have a decent BA and he has to show more power and fewer K's to be worth worrying about.

Wouldn't completely write off Tilson, but 2018 may not be his year yet due to recovery from injuries and long layoff.. He may need another AAA stint to get back into baseball shape and maybe be ready by mid 2018 or early 2019.
Leury is likely the frontrunner going into ST and he played good defense, and can steal a base.  Looks like a long-term 4th OFer as his hitting is suspect, particularly his low BB/higher K rates.

Usually contenders want an immediate impact from these free agents and expect the latter years of the contract to be underwater in terms of value.  But it's worth it if the guy helps get them a title in the first couple years of his deal.  This doesn't fit the Sox's situation. The rotation is a complete crapshoot, as is the relief corps plus 3b, Catcher, DH, LF are known weak spots.  Fixing CF is a drop in the bucket towards what is needed to contend in 2018-2019 unless the young pitchers suddenly blossom.

So what do you get from Cain in 2020-2021 when he's 34-35 years old ? Maybe a decent OFer but not the 4-5 WAR guy you were paying for. Spotrac has his projected market value at 4 years, $ 60 million.

YIKES!!!...

That might even be a lowball estimate based on what other guys got in this year's market.
Fowler went for 5 years/ $ 82 million and he had a 4.6 WAR in season before he signed, Cain's was 4.1 this year.  Encarnacion's WAR was 3.9 and he signed for 3 years $ 60 million.  Cain's agent could be asking for a deal comparable to Fowler's.
Depends on which contenders will be bidding also.  I see Cubs, Indians, Rangers having the biggest CF needs with Dodgers or Yankees as outside possibilities.

CF is a defensive spot and Willy Garcia doesn't have the range for it, although he has a powerful throwing arm which would play well in RF or LF.   Possible Cordell could be in the mix but he too has range issues.

Why do obsess over one spot ?  (like the Catcher spot before the beginning of this yr).. Who plays 3b ? Davidson sucks.  What about LF ?  Willy Garcia and his 705 OPS ? What about DH or Catcher ?  Who pitches 3-4-5 in rotation ? Who is the Closer and setup ?
Cain wants a 4-5 year deal at $ 65 mil +.. What good does his 4 added wins do on a team that won 67 games last year and has more holes than swiss cheese and probably will until 2020 when Jiminez, Moncada, Gioloto, Kopech, Collins and Co. can be real plus contributors ? By 2020 Luis Robert stands a good chance of being able to handle CF as well as an aging Lorenzo Cain.

MAYBE TITO POLO MAKES THE JUMP FROM AA!!!!!!!>
He's not ready in 2018 but who besides you gives a shit who the CFer is in 2018 ? Leury and Tilson are respectable enough to keep the seat warm in 2018.

Hamilton's defense and stolen bases do enough to offset his incredibly lightweight hitting (632 career OPS) to make him about a 2.5 win player in a good year and 1 win guy in a bad season.  Not a lot to get excited about.   Reds have found he's not someone to build on.  But he has some value and Reds won't give him away for stiffs.
As to "platooning at leadoff with Anderson", the only way Anderson should be batting 1st or 2nd is if he gets his OBP somewhere near league average .335 territory. Given his complete aversion to BB's that requires a .310+ BA.  Given his high K rate, this is one mighty task.
