    Garcia 1000+ OPS in August

Post by Deplorable Mark on Thu Aug 31, 2017 2:34 pm

So much for the theory at his bibidee bobedee BABIP is the harbinger for pending mediocrity.

Garcia is batting 433 in August with zero HR!!!!!!

Looks like his groundballs are luckier than ever

    Just how is this possible?!?!?!?!?

850 OPS first half; 906 OPS 2nd half.

Looks like the theories on BABIP are more like failed hypothesises

PS, you don't need any of the saber mumbo jumbo to understand Garcia's lack of HR.  1) Its nagging injuries; 2) given how crappy the hitters around him are, he is clearly being pitched to in an unusually cautious manner; 3) He has clearly matured as a hitter and is hitting the ball where its pitched instead of trying to kill every pitch.

this is why you have to watch the game people.  any stat hack can look at a stat line and invent a string of negative BS and justify it by abusing new age stats and splits.

The only reason not to sign Garcia long term this winter is if you think his injuries has permanently robbed him of his power.  5 years with two one year options sounds about right to me.

I saw Garcia in person. Nothing impressive.  Didn't work counts, didn't hit the ball particularly hard. No great sound of the ball off the bat.  He snuck a medium-hard groundball through the SS-3b hole, clearly something that he's done a lot of this season.  He's definitely a put-the-ball-in play kind of guy with fewer K's this year, and that explains his improvement in his BA. He also seems to use all fields which may account for a higher BA too.

But BA has been where his main value has lied, particularly in the 2nd half.  His 13 HR's is PATHETIC for a right fielder. Half the regular SS's in majors have more HR's than that.  He had only 12 HR's last year and 13 the year before and he wasn't supposed to be injured those years.   But if injury saps his power and he's had his share of DL time in his career then that's a problem too when it comes to long-term contract.

Plus, his walk rate has declined this year.  Sure more singles are preferable to more walks.  But how many years will he hit singles like this year ?  His .391 BABIP is higher than Ty Cobb's career .378 and Mike Trout's career .359.   If Garcia had a .330 BABIP (still above average but more realistic) he'd only be a 270/317/440 with his 170 ISO and 47 OBP-BA spread.

But knowing the Sox front office, they will put on the rose-colored glasses once more and do what you suggest and plunk down the $ 70 + million on a 4 year+ deal.  The Sox just cannot resist the emotional knee-jerk reaction of rewarding a guy coming off a good season with a nice contract. And then the inevitable Adam Dunn, Adam LaRoche, Melky Cabrera shit keeps happening.

One more comment before going on vacation.  Not voting "against" Garcia.   He's made some improvements this year in cutting down K's,  modest increase in power and spraying the ball around.  Maybe even on defense although he's still looked bad out there at times.
Clearly done enough to earn a pay raise to $ 6-7 mil and the starting job next year, but IMO the Sox need to wait to see what 2018 brings.  RFers need to hit 25+ HR's a year, not the 15 Garcia will this year.
Eloy Jiminez looks like the real deal (true 30+ HR guy or more). No reason for Sox to go overboard with Garcia with a guy like Jiminez in the wings.

EXCUSE ME BUT THE GAME WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WHEN TY COBB WAS IN HIS PRIME.  BACK THEN NOBODY STRUCK OUT OR HIT HOMERS, SO TO COMPARE BABIP OF TODAY TO 100 YEARS AGO IS APPLES AND ORANGES

NOT TO MENTION BABIP IS MORE OF A PITCHING INDICATOR THAN A HITTING INDICATOR.

AND YES, HE SHOULD HAVE TWICE AS MANY HOMERS, BUT HAS LONG HAS HE IS HITTING, WHO CARES.  I'D RATHER HAVE HIM GO WITH THE PITCH AND SMACK SINGLES ALL OVER THE PLACE THEN HAVE HIM HIT LIKE TIM ANDERSON

AND WHO GIVES A RATS ASS ABOUT ELOY JIMINEZ.  HE'S JUST ONE OF.  YOU NEED 3.  PLUS A DH.  AS MUCH AS I'D LIKE TO SEE WILLY, MICKEY, AND THE DUKE DOMINATE THE 20'S, NO GUARENTEE THAT THEY WILL.  PLUS GARCIA IS JUST 26.  SO A LONG TERM DEAL BUYS YOU HIS PRIME.  AND IF YOU DO IT THIS WINTER INSTEAD NEXT, YOU PROBABLY SAVE $20MILLION AS WELL.

PERSONALLY, I THINK GARCIA SPENT THIS YEAR LEARNING HOW TO HIT AND AS HE CONTINUES TO LEARN, HE WILL ADD POWER.  THE MAN IS SUPPOSE TO BE SCARY STRONG
