Post by Deplorable Mark on Thu Aug 10, 2017 1:06 pm

With Lopez being called up Friday, Mike Pelfrey is off to the bullpen.

Who was it that called to make Pefrey closer a month ago?!?!?!?!!?

Pelfrey is exactly with Dennis Eckersely was at in April of 1987.

Pelfrey's stuff isn't going to get guys out no matter what job he has.   Eckersly was a craftsman and at least a decent starting pitcher.  Pelfrey has a career 5.03 ERA.  Sucks...

As usual, agree with some of what you say, have to take issue with other points.
1- Agree, third time through the order is when he gets hurt most.
2 -Agree, first time through the order is where he's most effective both this year and his career.
3 -Agree, Sox don't have a lot of good bullpen options anymore and they might as well see what Pelfrey can do in a relief role.
4- Agree, some failed starters have become quality closers

    However
1- Pelfrey throws 92 and is poor at striking guys out.  Most closers today are 95+ and K a lot of guys.
2- Pelfrey's first time through the order OPS against is .768 with a 1.30 WHIP.  That's mediocre at best.
Doesn't suggest any real dominance first time through.
3 - Pelfrey is .708 OPS  against in high leverage situations.  Most successful closers are 650 or below. Again, doesn't suggest Pelfrey has any special "closer mentality" to overcome his mediocre stuff.
4 - Yes, failed starters do SOMETIMES succeed as closers.  But many end up like Bud Norris, who's about to lose his job as Angel closer.  Successful for a couple months then the roof caves in.

I think Pelfrey is middle relief fodder.  Sox have enough hard throwers in the minors who could eventually wind up as Closers.  HAte to say it, but that may be Fulmer's fate or even Gioloto's

However, who on the big league roster meets your howevers?!?!?!?!??!

As for Chad Fulmer, the Bleacher Report suggests moving him to the pen.  The KARK does it next year in the minors and doesn't call him up until his free agency year turns from 2023 to 2024.

PS, the Eck looked like washed up crap in March of 1987 and the A's didn't try him as closer until they tried everybody else.

PSS, I bet sore armed Dustin Hermanson would have failed your however list.

MAYBE HE AIN'T ECK, BUT HE COULD BE DUSTIN HERMANSON.
BASEBALL HISTORY IS LITTERED WITH FAILED STARTERS THAT BECAME QUALITY CLOSERS.

Baseball history is much more littered with failed starters who tried closing but bombed at that too.  Particularly when they try to use Closer job as a way to put a 32 year old + fading starter (like Pelfre) out to pasture.  As Angels are finding out with Bud Norris.

Eckersly and John Smoltz are the two rare exceptions who had both a lengthy career as starter and Closer.  Smoltz clearly wasn't a "failed" starter though and arguably Eck wasn't either - he was basically league average SP.  Hermansen has some similarity to Pelfrey but Dustin was a couple years younger (31) when he converted than Pelfrey and he didn't really last that long as  Closer.

The truly successful converts, particularly in last 10 years, are hard throwers without the full starter repertoire who switch to Closing in their 20's like Wade Davis, Zach Britton, Andrew Miller.  But even they are exceptions among today's Closers, the vast majority of whom start as middle relievers or setup guys from the get-go.  Then inherit the job when the incumbent Closer gets hurt, implodes or retires. Like David Robertson did.

Jeez, Pelfrey doesn't have to turn into Rollie Fingers for this move to work

Now is the time to experiment!!!!!

Either Pelfrey shows value as a closer or he moves us closer to the #1 draft pick

And who gives a rats ass how many years he can last.  Just needs to get to 7/31/2018

failed starters becoming closers is not as rare as you think.  Sometimes 1/2 a season is all you need

Clippard the big red blown save has been dealt to the Astros for the infamous PTBNL or cash

Potential closers are suggested to be Petricka, Bummer or Goldberg

I'm sure all the board pro wrestling fans are rooting for Goldberg.

I agree it is no big deal if Pelfrey or anyone else the Sox run out to close bombs.  My point was clubs today rarely try to convert fading, declining starters into Closers. And the recent Bud Norris experiment shows why.  Guys who lack the good "out pitch" as starters usually aren't good Closers either.  Successful "converts" to Closing have been and are hard-throwing starters who lack the third pitch to be real successful 6-7 inning pitchers.  But "converts" are a minority as most of today's Closers were relievers from the get-go in the majors.
A rebuilding club like the Sox shouldn't worry about finding ways to rehabilitate the careers of 32-36 year olds. However. since Pelfrey's stretched out to be a starter, use him like
the other day - to eat 3-4 inning middle relief chunks. Instead of burning 2 or 3 different relievers for the same # of innings.  Considering how few innings Sox starters deliver,
(some get KO'ed in the 3rd or 4th inning) there's enough work for two middle relief Pelfreys.

Not my point is that the White Sox don't have anybody else at this point in time and that the Pelfrey types have had success in the past.

As for what the rebuilding White Sox should be focusing on, thats completely irrelevant.  They can make 2 bullpens out of what they traded away and placed on the disabled list.  They still have to play the games.  so yes, they should be focusing on resurrect Plefry in the last 6 weeks because they ain't got nobody else, and its better to pitch Pelfrey than it is to start the service time clock on some of their prospects

To put it simply, Closer Pelfry isn't the KARK's plan A.  more like plan Q.  ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP have already been tried.

Anderson's on a roll lately - homered last night against the Dodgers' 2nd best pitcher (Wood).
