Should OUR White Sox trade James Shields

Post by Deplorable Mark on Thu Jun 15, 2017 8:55 am

In a heartbeat, is most likely the consensus answer.

However, allow the KARK to play devil's advocate.

If Shields can stay healthy, the 2018 White Sox can have one heck of a pitching staff.  With an ever improving lineup, OUR White Sox can contend while rebuilding.

I don't see how Shields would interfere with the rebuilding process.  All baseball teams, from the odds one favorite to bottom of the cellar doormat are in constant need of pitching.  Keeping Shields may actually help the rebuilding process by preventing the young guns from either being rushed or over used.

Now if the right offer comes along, of course trade Shields.  But don't just dump him.  There is a real possibility his trade value will be much higher next summer.  And let's not forget that gambling on older former stars pays off big more often than we think.

This sounds similar to the argument for clinging to Danks and his bad contract a few years ago    Very Happy   Sox have $ 17 mil remaining on Shields as of midyear 2017 and likely have to eat some part of that to trade him. Plus he's been out for a while, and will need a steady month of mid 3.00's ERA to prove he's not the same batting practice pitcher of a year ago.

Sounds to me like you are claiming OUR White Sox will be forced to keep Shields because he has minimal trade value.

What kind of trade value should this command ?
-35 year old year pitcher who's appeared in only 3 games this year
    - ERA this year of 1.62 despite 10  BB's and 3 HR's in 17 IP
    - 5.85 ERA last year
    - $ 17 Mil left on Sox's obligation to him as of mid-2017

Maybe he should start training with Mike Pelfrey

Maybe Shields trained Pelfrey.   Shields has a 1.62 ERA with 8K/5 BB ratio.  Pelfrey has a 3.80 ERA and 5K/4 BB ratio.  The training consists of a bunch of mirrors surrounded by big clouds of smoke.

Someone will take him with as many starting pitcher that are going down. However the Sox will have to pay a majority of his contract.
