Should OUR White Sox just keep Quintana?

Post by Deplorable Mark on Thu Jun 15, 2017 8:40 am

The KARK remembers stating that a trade of Chris Sale is a double edge sword.  The prospects he will bring in will help build a legit contender.  However, once the team is a legit contender, Chris Sale would be exactly the type of pitcher needed to head the staff.

The same logic applies to Jose Quintana.  However the scale has been severely watered down given his start.  Unlike the Sale trade, where I think the White Sox got 2 future stars, does Quintana bring even one?  For a Quintana trade to make sense, he needs to bring in a difference making bat.  If not a young established player like Kyle Schwarber, or to a lesser extent Joey Gallo, than at least a hitter than can contend for the 2018 ROY.

Absent this, the White Sox are better off keeping Quintana for 2018.

In 2018, with a healthy Rodon and a rebounding Quintana, OUR White Sox have the foundation for a championship caliber rotation.  Giolito, Lopez and Fulmer will be ready to fill the remainder of the rotation.  Kopech and Adams will be right behind them.

By 2019, OUR White Sox should have starting pitching that can match up with anybody.

Since he won't likely fetch the Mother Lode anytime soon, no pressure to trade him. But he still has trade value for what he's perceived as now (solid mid-rotation guy) given his reasonable contract.

Hope the Sox brass has some special insight as to whether Q's  2017 is like Danks' 2011 - a warning flag of a possible bigger tumble to come. In which case, they try to get some kind of reasonable return for him this summer while the getting is still good.  Can't just assume Q will keep putting up strong numbers indefinitely.

I think my 2nd paragraph nails it.

But since you hinted at it, maybe Quintana needs to be moved to the DL instead of another team
