    Another Big Signing

Post by rmapasad on Sat Jan 28, 2017 10:00 am

The White Sox signed outfielder Peter Bourjos to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, according to Colleen Kane of The Chicago Tribune.Bourjos, 30, didn’t have much success with the Phillies last season, hitting .251/.292/.389 with five home runs and 23 RBIs. Still, with a productive spring, Bourjos should be able to earn a spot on Chicago’s roster.      A career .243 hitter, Bourjos has proven to be a plus defender and could be a versatile piece for the White Sox.>>

Stockpiling more cheap OFers (Liriano, Asche, Tilson now Bourjos) is probably OK since they will need bodies to play CF and RF.  Other than Tilson though, it's doubtful any of these guys will be with the Sox in 2019.  Theoretically signing all these OFers might block Sox prospects like Adam Engel and Jacob May from getting some playing time in 2017, but reality is neither of them looked that hot in Charlotte last year (660 OPS' and they're both 24).  If by some miracle either Engel or May suddenly start hitting in AAA or more realistically if the Sox trade for a promising young OFer, Liriano and/or Bourjos are kind of guys that can easily be released to make room and Sox won't have to eat any big salaries in the process.

So cheap Quad A OF's are OK

but a catcher that has actually done something in his career isn't

BTW, Engel and May rate far higher as prospects than any catcher not named Collins

Here's the problem with a guy like Wieters.  Same as with Cabrera, Frazier, Robertson, Garcia or Lawrie.  They play just well enough (ie., mediocre) and are paid enough that a club won't sit them down in favor of prospects.   But because of their pay and mediocrity they have very little trade value. So Sox are stuck with them.  Instead of Jones or Ynoa getting trials as Closer, Sox use Robertson.  Instead of Davidson having a good shot at DH or even 3b,  Garcia and Frazier get the PT.

Granted, guys like Davidson, Engel, and Narvaez are long-shots to become decent major leaguers but 2017 is time to play long-shots when Sox there's nothing to lose.   Sometimes long-shots pay off.  Tyler Naquin of the Indians had a pedestrian 780 OPS in AAA in 2015 but in 2016 he got more PT due to Brantley being hurt and Byrd getting suspended for PEDs.  Sometimes having the veteran obstacles removed opens up the door for younger longshots to blossom. Sox already have too many mediocre vet obstacles - no need to add another in Wieters.
Specifically re; Narvaez, he is supposed to be  good with the glove and that has value in majors where not many Catchers hit worth a damn anyway. Giving him a lot of PT in 2017 could help him polish his defensive skills further and learn a lot about major league hitters.   If he survives as Sox catcher in 2017-2018 at a minimum he could be a good backup and mentor to Collins in 2019.   Where Wieters will be long gone and as useless to the Sox then as he would be in 2017.

and here is the problem with your analysis

If 2019 is the target, who on the opening day roster will still be here other than Rodon and Anderson

Taking wild gambles at every other position with the Avi Garcia's of the world is just plane silly.

Plus your completely ignoring service time.  As well as looking a gift horse in the mouth

What is wrong with giving Wieters a one year deal?
