As much as possible as long as a) they are under 27 years old and b) have some talent or skillset that may prove useful to the Sox in 2019-2020 if they are given a chance to get some big league experience to refine it.
Doesn't matter than only 1 in 4 make it. The 1 that does makes the experimentation worthwhile and the 3 that don't haven't really cost the Sox anything.  By 2019-2020 absolutely no one will give two shits whether the Sox won 70 games or 65 games in 2017.

Giving Wieters a ONE YEAR deal is just fine.

The Cubs had guys plugged in for a year during their rebuild.

No, Avi Garcai is the 3 out of 4 who got his shot and flunked . I think that Tim Anderson is the 1 in 4  that is seeming to work out among the undisciplined athletes that Kenny Williams is so in love with.
Anderson got his shot because there were no real vet obstacles in his way.  Rollins was subpar, and Sox had only nominal salary to eat when they cut him.  IMO, that's the kind of vet the Sox need in 2017. Like Bourjos is.  Minimum salary, can hold down a spot long enough so that a kid in the minors can stall his big league service clock, then someone who Sox can easily release and kiss the $ 500 K - $ 1 mil salary off as no big deal.
2017 - 2018 is audition time.  See who sinks or who swims among your 23-27 year olds.  As far as watchability, I'd personally see a bunch of young guys busting their humps to try to make a future for themselves with the White Sox than 30-33 year old mediocre vets playing out the string hoping to get traded to a contender or trying to do just enough to get a contract from another club next year.

Just because the Cubs made a couple of those wasteful, useless plug-in moves (DeJesus, Wada, Jackson) doesn't mean they're a good idea.  Cubs had more money to burn than the Sox.  Although I could give a shit about how much of Reinsdorf's money Wieters would waste, the real question is whether he might block some PT from  Narvaez who might become  a useful defensive Catcher who'd benefit from some more major league reps this year.  But Narvaez's hitting is weak enough that he won't be more than a futute Sox backup anyway so it's no great tragedy either if someone like Wieters came in.   Right now Sox should be focusing on what they can get for Quitana or Frazier rather than on phone calls to Matt Wieter's agent.

    HEY ROGER

THE WORLD SERIES ISN'T WON BY BACK UP CATCHERS!!!!!!

AND YOUR FULL OF CRAP ON TIM ANDERSON!!!!!!

A FIRST ROUNDER THAN NEVER FAILED ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!!

THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE OF THE TYPE OF PLAYER YOU WANT TO GIVE CHANCES TO IN ORDER TO SAVE REINSDORF MONEY.  BUT GIVEN THE PRODUCT YOU'D CREATE, IT JUST WREAKS OF PENNY WISE POUND FOOLISH

AND SPARE ME YOUR FALSE CHOICE OF WHAT YOU'D RATHER WATCH.  OUTSIDE OF TIM ANDERSON AND CARLOS RODON, I  DON'T SEE ANYBODY ESLE ON THE PROJECTED OPENING DAY ROSTER MAKING THE TEAM.  LOOK ARE WHAT YOUR BELOVED CUBS DID TO KRIS BRYANT IN 2015 IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT.

FINALLY.  THIS ISN'T DECEMBER 1ST.  ITS 2 WEEKS B4 CAMP.  A SMART GM GOES BARGAIN HUNTING.  WEITERS FILLS A NEED.  AND WHO'S TO SAY HE DOESN'T BOUNCE BACK.  AND IF HE DOESN'T, THEN HE CAN BACK UP NARVAEZ.  BECAUSE IF YOU ACTUALLY LOOKED AT THE TEAM ISN'T OF LOOKING FOR WAYS TO DELIBERATELY DISAGREE WITH ME, YOU'S SEE THE WHITE SOX AT BEST HAVE A HALF A PLATOON AT CATCHER

Of course they have to field a team but they have two choices:  1- Give younger players a chance at open spots  or  2 - Spend money on free agent 30+ year old vets to fill those slots so Sox can win games now.   Weren't the Sox supposed to be done with choice #2  ?

    Figure it out genius

Choice number 1 isn't available at every position.

And your 1 in 4 chance is more like 1 in 400 with the guys that are truly available

They are not going to rush guys to the Majors.

This is not hard to fathom.

There is talk this rebuild will take 3 to 5 years.

They have thrown shit against the wall for years.

Fans are aware they FINALLY have a PLAN.

James Shields may have been the straw that broke the WIN NOW camel's back.

ROME and the Cubs were not built in a day.

We have had decades of absolute bullshit.  WIN NOW with Adam Dunn and DeAza!!!

ONLY A FUCKING IDIOT SEES WHAT IS NOT WORKING AND WANTS IT TO CONTINUE.

Throw the washed up clowns out there on one year deals.  EMULATE THE CUBS.

    PRETEND THEY CONTEND IS OVER.

I, for one, am not suggesting they rush anyone to the majors. However, there are Quad A type guys who won't be part of the long term plans. Would someone like Matt Wieters even sign with a team that he knows is going nowhere? Some guys might, if they were coming off of a bad year or two and are hoping for a larger contract down the road.

    Exactly

That is why Tim Anderson and Carlos Rodon will be the only to legit young guys on the Opening Day roster.

Throw in that Tillson kid from the Cards.  But then, wasn't he also a top 10er?

He certainly isn't some 25 year old quad A clown that some one here made up with some bullshit claim of a 1 in 4 success rate

Nobody is pretending to contend, but they still need to field a team that is at least somewhat watchable

    Never hurts to ask

And with spring training 2 weeks away, he might be getting desperate

By next week, he just might sign the first offer over 5 mil

I've seen plenty of guys over priced themselves into early retirement.  I believe Jermaine's career Dye'd that way

Throw the washed up clowns out there on one year deals.  EMULATE THE CUBS.>>
The Cubs didn't sign a bunch of 30+ yr old vets on one year deals so the team would lose fewer games or to keep younger players' service clocks from running.  They knew the team would suck and they held  auditions -  22 yr old Rizzo got the 1b job,  young Castro and Barney started in the MIF,  Campana played  OF and they got 26 yr old Valuena off waivers to play 3b.  Then later flipped him to Houston in the Dexter Fowler deal.

Cubs lost 101 games that year experimenting but they found out who swam (Rizzo, Castro, Valbuena) and who sank (Campana, Barney, etc.)  Those are the things the Sox should be doing.

The only 30+ yr old free agent they signed that year was DeJesus and that was a waste.  He never got traded for anyone.  While it didn't hurt the Cubs it was of zero help and value in their rebuild. Finding out who could make it and then letting them get seasoning was key to their rebound though.

What is the difference if the Sox have Matt Wieters or some 28 year old career minor leaguer catching? Absolutely none. The team is destined for last place, or, at best, 4th place. Yes, if Matt Wieters has a decent first half, you can trade him at the deadline. But what do you think the Sox will really get for him? I'll tell you what they will get for him. A 23 year old who is destined to just fill in a position in the minor leagues.

And you are the last person who needs to be criticizing other's grammar.  I love you

YOU'RE ANOTHER ONE THAT NEEDS TO LOOK AT THE CALENDAR AND THE ROSTER

Yeah, Rizzo was a target for the Cubs, but he was no sure thing.  He failed his first audition in the majors the year before in San Diego (hit .141). That's why Cubs could pry him away - San Diego was down on him, thought he might be the kinda guy that hits in minors but flops in the majors.   I recall you claiming he could be a bust.  Typical anti-Cub bias, but the jury was still out.
Obviously the Cubs believed he was too young his first trial and they knew his minor league #'s showed he had talent. But the jury was still out whether he had the mental fortitude and only by giving him another trial (i.e, a second "audition") do they find out.  An audition is when you have to show you can handle the role. That's what Rizzo had to do in 2012.

I BELIEVE MY EXACT STATEMENT WAS ANTHONY RIZZO IS ITALIAN FOR COREY PATTERSON.  AND YES, THE SOLE REASON I THOUGHT HE WOULD SUCK WAS THAT HE WAS IN A CUB UNIFORM

ADMIT IT, ITALIAN FOR COREY PATTERSON IS FUNNY

PS, I BELIEVE RIZZO WAS ALSO BLOCKED AT THE TIME.  I ALSO RECALL SAYING RIZZO WAS THE KID THE SOX SHOULD TARGET PRIOR TO HIM GOING TO THE CUBS.
