    Abreu opts out!!

Post by Shooters Buffet on Mon Nov 14, 2016 10:36 pm

Abreu opted out of his deal and is arbitration eligible.

    Smart move.

Dickhead Chairman either pays him MARKET in a new deal or he goes to arbitration every Winter for 3 years and gets more than his contract called for.

Since he's only a 3 year player, not sure Abreu is in line to get a lot more than what he's slated for in 2017.  But this is now PR territory for the Sox.  They really can't cut his salary and upset the few fans they have left.   So they likely give him a token raise to $ 12 million.   Abreu's agent probably figures if he puts up a good 2017-2018, he's could get $ 16-18 mil in 2019 or the equivalent of what Arrieta  is projected for in his final arb year coming up 2017.
Of course the risk Abreu takes is getting hurt or having a really bad year in which case the Sox might decide to non-tender him.  But then Abreu could go free agency and get a multi-year deal somewhere else.

Roger, do the Sox still get six years of service time from Abreu?  I was under the impression that since they signed him as a free agent that they don't necessarily "own" him if he opts out.

Opting out of his contract means Abreu has opted into the arbitration system which allows clubs to control a player's rights for his first 6 years of service. Unless Sox choose to non-tender him at some point, Abreu is stuck with the Sox through 2019 season.

Meanwhile, the fanboys are pining for AJ Pierzynski.

THE KARK'S understand of the MLB CBA is that a player cannot declare free agency unless he has six years of service.

    There is not separate system.

My guess is that Abreau just had one shot to void his contract.

    Abreau would have been due 2017 = 10.5; 2018 = 11.5; 2019 = 12.0

My guess is that while his 2017 salary will be more or less the same, he would make much more in 2018 and 2019 in arbitration.

I also suspect that he would never suck enough to the point where he would be nontendered.

Abreau turns 30 this January.  I do not sign him long term this winter

1st basemen are supposed to hit HR's, particularly if they are like an ox on the bases (Abreu is) and can't field very well (he can't).  At 36 HR's in 2014, he was a real plus.  With only 25 HR's and 1.6 WAR in 2016, he was merely a league average 1st baseman. If his power trendline keeps going down or he gets hurt he may be on the road to non-tendering by 2018-2019.

Probably right especially since guys often have a bounceback season left in them at ages 30-31.  However, if he starts 2017 like he did first part of this year, then gets hurt and misses a good chunk of 2017, Sox will have to think long and hard about tendering him a contract at around $ 13 mil in 2018.   Abreu has also taken some risk with this decision.

Agree with TeleFrank. Fuck him....he can walk for all I care. One year wonder who began the downward spiral once the league figured him out. Stiff isn't even worth this thread with his name on it.

Which is why a lot of guys opt for the security of guaranteed multi-year contracts even though it invariably means less money than what they're worth in the market. They have to stay healthy (and productive) all those years to get "market" pay.

You're a tough audience Very Happy But agree that if he's no better than 2016, he's not worth the $ 12 million he'll likely get in arb negotiations. Of course, this is same old, problem for the Sox. They will be overpaying someone to play a relatively easy job to fill like 1b, RF, or DH because they have no one cheaper in the system who could step up and take over. Same could be said for a $ 14 million Melky Cabrera. Basically Sox have to hope that these guys return to their 2014 form rather than the mediocrities they've been over the last two years. Not the way that successful ballclubs operate, for sure.
