Is he far enough over-the-hill for the White Sox to consider him?

Seriously, what's wrong with him?  Has he lost 4-5 mph off his fastball?  Is he injured?  The "Big Game James" Shields at the top of his game is not exactly the type of player that the Sox go after.

He is  2-6 so far, so that fits in....but he has the worst run support in baseball and he is owed a shit load of money ....which doesn't fit in. My question is, who the hell do the Sox have to give up to get anyone??

Valid question.  Anderson and Fulmer are supposed to be cornerstones for the future and Sox are unlikely to trade them.   Sox have no other pitcher under age 27 at the AAA or AA level with an ERA under 4.00, even Fulmer. Maybe 20 year old Spencer Adams at the high A level (3.88 ERA, 1.37 WHIP but that isn't overly impressive).

Aside from Tim Anderson, no other young hitters are batting over .300 in the majors or minors.   This guy Jason Coats (26 yrs old) at Charlotte is hitting .325 with a career .282 BA in the minors. Doubtful any club considers this 29th round draft choice to be much of a prospect though.

Given James Shields' contract, the Sox could possibly get him for a bucket of spit if they really wanted him.

He's owed $ 20 million a year through 2019 which is hardly a bargain. But with a 3.29 ERA over these last five seasons and 3.06 so far this year, his salary isn't a gross overpay either.   Since contenders always need a top starter, Padres undoubtedly will want some prospects for him although they can't expect blue-chippers.  Sox have B+ prospects in Anderson and Fulmer that they shouldn't trade for a 34 year old pitcher with that contract but they lack the B/B- prospects that the Pads would probably be able to get for Shields.  Sox have an overabundance of C- and below minor leaguers.

Given the way that James Shields pitched today, KW would be chasing after him! Sad

10 earned runs in 2-2/3 innings against the Mariners.  Eeek!

    Just posted on Rotoworld.com:

"Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports the Padres are closing in on a deal that would send James Shields to the White Sox. Lin expects the deal to be finalized before Shields' scheduled start Sunday against the Rockies. The Padres are reportedly targeting SS prospect Fernando Tatis Jr., who signed a $700,000 free agent deal with the White Sox last summer. Padres chairman Ron Fowler ripped the team in a radio interview this week and is looking to shake up the roster. Shields could be the first casualty. So far Shields hasn't lived up to his four-year, $75 million contract. In 11 starts this year, he's 2-7 with a bloated 4.28 ERA."

Maybe Navarro will find that he's "tipping his pitches", or Cooper might "detect a flaw in his delivery" that would enable him to give up only 9 runs his next time out. clown

Shields' ERA was low 3.00's prior just a week ago but his recent 10 run outing pushed it to 4.28.
This early in the season, one really bad game can do that.  Still, he hasn't been much of an innings-eater, going past 6 IP in only 4 of his 11 starts. Certainly no ace anymore.
BTW, Sox may have signed Tatis but there is no evidence that he's playing in the minors.  He's a long way off the majors if he's any kind of prospect.  Do remember his dad hit two grand slams in one inning off Dodger pitcher Chan Ho Park though.

Sox only on the hook for $5 million of the salary this year.

Rent a player.  Hope he has a decent season and trade this albatross.
