    Sox sign RHP Miguel Gonzalez

Post by MGJOHNSON on Sun Apr 03, 2016 4:03 pm

    From Rotoworld.com:

"White Sox signed RHP Miguel Gonzalez to a minor league contract. The 31-year-old right-hander was released by the Orioles after he failed to crack the Opening Day rotation. Given the uncertainty at the back end of the White Sox rotation, Gonzalez could quickly get an opportunity to pitch for the big league club if he starts off strong at Triple-A Charlotte. The 31-year-old right-hander registered a 4.91 ERA in 26 starts last season for Baltimore, but he had a 3.45 ERA (118 ERA+) in 435 2/3 innings between 2012-2014."

Miguel Gonzalez was a decent starting pitcher for Baltimore up until about the middle of last season when he developed inflammation in both his right shoulder and elbow.  He had a lousy Spring Training this year.  Hence, Baltimore cut him.  He's well worth the risk on a minor league deal.

The big question is: Piece of "what"?  We'll find out...

Anyway, it's not like they gave him a huge multi-year mega contract.  If he flops at AAA Charlotte, it's no big loss.

Latos' spring training outings don't inspire much confidence. Gonzalez's were even worse, so neither one of these guys looks like much of an answer right now.

When a team tries to catch lightening in a bottle, it wants to fill that bottle with as much rusty scrap metal as possible and hoist it high in stormy weather.  The Sox are simply trying to improve their odds.
