    Austin Jackson

Congrats, Roger.  You called this one.
    From Rotoworld.com:

"White Sox signed OF Austin Jackson to a one-year, $5 million contract. Jackson passed his physical without any issues and will be in White Sox camp on Monday. It still remains unclear exactly how he'll be utilized, but his arrival is terrible news for the fantasy outlook of Avisail Garcia. Jackson is a better defender in center field than anyone on the current White Sox roster, so he figures to get most of his starts there. Adam Eaton would shift to right, with Melky Cabrera handling the bulk of playing time in left."

At least it's only for a year.

And now for the good news.  Mike Ott has been designated for assignment.  And Adam LaRoche may be benched against southpaws for Avi Garcia.

I agree with you that Jackson doesn't add much, but this at least reduces some liabilities -  Garcia's glove time in the OF and LaRoche's AB's v. LHers.   If Garcia really is ready to break out (which I still think is doubtful) he'll get a chance to show that against LHers which is where he's had success.  If LaRoche can rebound (which is also doubtful) then he'll get his chance too.  If Jackson is a pile of shit then the Sox aren't out more than $ 5 mil and it's Reiny's money and who cares about that ?

Garcia plays OF like he's pulling his tool. He needs to DH v. LHers since he's got a career .765 OPS against them.  Build off success there and then get him to DH v. RHers more often, especially if LaRoche looked as finished as he did last year.   Jackson can play defense, so stick him out there to catch flyballs that Garcia would miss.  As long as Jackson's bat isn't a complete wet noodle, he'll provide some value.

IS MELKEY CABRERA REALLY ANY BETTER WITH THE GLOVE?!?!?!?

UNLESS THE KARK IS COMPLETELY UNDERRATING THE VALUE OF CABRERA'S DEFENSE, LET THE KID WITH THE TOOLS LEARN HIS CRAFT.

BTW, I BELIEVE GARCIA BLOWS AWAY JACKSON IN OPS THAT PAST 2 YEARS.  JACKSON, NOT GARCIA IS THE ONE MORE DESERVED A PART TIME ROLE BASED UPON STATISTICS

Both Garcia and Cabrera stunk defensively.  As to OPS, Jackson 2015 = 696.. Garcia = 675 and Jackson played in a tougher hitter's park most of the year.   As to 2014, Garcia topped him (718 to 655) but Garcia only had 190 PA's. Not a fair comp.   One thing I noticed about Jackson these past two years.  He's OK for the first half (730 in 2014, 699 in 2015) but turns to crap in the second half when he's been traded.  That's why the guy had to take a $ 5 mil, one year deal in March.
Jackson may be OK for a while and who knows if Garcia matures.  Honestly I think stupidity and not maturity is his problem, but we shall see.

Great, because changing your batting stance at 25 yrs old in the Major Leagues, always tends to turn out well. Do we have another Rios in RF?

Rios was an inconsistent head case with the Sox.  But at age 25, he was a good ballplayer for Toronto  - 303/349/526 line with strong defense.  His age 25 season was his breakout -he had only a 703 OPS the year before.  So looking at that, there might be hope for Garcia.  EXCEPT there are also differences.  Rios was not a real selective hitter (chasing 28% of pitches out of the zone) but he was nowhere near the hacker Garcia is (chasing 46% out of the zone). Rios ran the bases and could field.  Garcia is subpar at both.  People can talk about  physique and athleticism all they want, but this isn't the triathlon.  Baseball is a skill sport and tools have translate into skills.

So I guses the question becomes

    What is more likely

Jackson regaining his 2012 form or Garcia developing

Regardless, Garcia plays the field when in the lineup

I am actually a Garcia backer, as I wrote last summer. He's not Cabrera, but who is? I like the Jackson trade, but he isn't going to take the sox over the top either. I'd play Garcia daily until he proves this year that he can't. Spotting Jackson, into LF, and RF, and even CF as he's probably a better CFer than Eaton also (and now I'm sure I'll be reading about range factor, blah blah blah). Pigeonholing Garcia as a right handed DH, at age 24, is a little immature.

I believe the word is premature

BTW, Garcia had 17 assists last year.  Why on earth would you want to bench an arm like that?

and just who would Garcia be taking at bats away from that is so damn important?

seems to me, somebody on this board is over relaying on last year's sbarmetrics to make a penny wise pound foolish decision

Ok, Garcia has a cannon arm, so maybe he should think about pitching.  Forget sabermetrics.  Fans and experts who observe him say that his instincts in the field are atrocious, he has one of the worst first steps toward the ball of anyone in baseball, etc.,etc..
I fail to see why the Sox should make sure this dumbass gets max time in the field and at the plate. The minor leagues are for guys to "develop".. You don't wet nurse shitheads in the majors.
