    Alexei signs with Padres

Post by rmapasad on Fri Jan 15, 2016 12:09 pm

Just announced. Padres sign Ramirez to guaranteed one year $ 4 million deal.   That's $ 6 mil less than the

Sox would have paid if they had picked up Alexei's option this year.  As it stands now, apparently Saladino

will start at SS unless the Sox open up the cash drawer and sign Ian Desmond.

This is the typical White sox half-assed attempt to WIN NOW. They improve the 3b and 2b positions and weaken considerably the most important defensive position on the field. Doesn't matter that Saladino won't hit what Alexei would hit, he isn't going to field anywhere near his caliber, even at the age that he is now.  If the Sox want to win, or compete, then Desmond has to be a done deal. Otherwise, just another 3rd place finish, flirting with .500 until they collapse.

BUT, YES, I AGREE, IF THERE AIN'T NOTHING ELSE COMING, THIS WAS A PRETTY HALF ASS EFFORT TO BUILD A WINNER

Somebody actually expecting Reinsdorf to CHANGE at the age of 80???

Obviously the presence of Ricketts and the Cubs remaking has done little to motivate Reinsdorf and his INVESTORS.

Just trot out the half assed WIN NOW effort and give the dopey Fanboys some reason to LEAD CHEERS!!!

Saladino has a weak stick for sure.  .261 career BA in the minors so the .225 he hit with the Sox last year isn't likely to improve much.   His glove was top notch at 3b but not so good in the few games he played SS.   He only played SS half the time in the minors.  If a guy is a really good defensive SS , teams don't mess around and move him to other positions.
As to the half-assness of the Sox's efforts this year, they had 7 spots that were weak in 2015 (2b,3b, SS, DH, LF, RF, and Catcher).  2b and 3b were the worst of the worst so Frazier and Lawrie will help but we're not talking miracles either - it's not like they're Joe Morgan and Mike Schmidt.  Catcher should be better too.   That still leaves 4 spots where they are basically hoping that guys who sucked last year won't suck again.
Sox were 10 games out of playoffs and fixing 1/2 the offensive holes probably still leaves them short.   To really contend, LaRoche and Cabrera have to rebound some, Garcia has to not suck so badly, and the performers (Abreu, Eaton, Sale, Quintana, Rodon, Robertson) have to stay healthy and keep performing.  It could happen, but it's a lot to ask from this roster.

I would be pleased if they just played the game right.
Ventura said during Spring Training last year they sucked defensively.
Start by playing the game correctly.

In 2015 the Sox were dead last in the majors in BOTH offense and defense.  Playing better defense will help but where will that come from ?   Eaton in CF, Abreu/LaRoche at 1b, Garcia in RF and Cabrera in LF were the big defensive culprits last year and they all return.  Lawrie will probably worsen 2b defense compared to Sanchez and while Frazier is better than Gillaspie at 3b, he isn't going to be much better glove-wise than Saladino, who played 1/2 the season there.  Meanwhile switching Saladino to SS or plugging Anderson in means worse defense at SS.
The only real hope is that the offense gets better and the Sox pitch lights out.

I remember when Goofy Kenny picked up Manny Ramirez for September.

I posted the Sox sucked and were not going to slug their way to the Playoffs.

Our resident cheerleader posted THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE TO.

If a team makes ERRORS, THROWS TO WRONG BASES...both physical and mental errors....the team is DOOMED.

Pitchers can not be expected to strike out 27 batters per game.

As much as MLB has reverted to Little League....Wait for the Fat Kid to hit a Homer...you still have to catch the ball.

By the time Manny Ramirez got to the Sox, he was over the hill as a hitter - his power was completely kaput. Sure, he was a terrible fielder but he was through his whole career.  That didn't stop the Red Sox from winning 2 World Series with him, and as a Dodger fan I can testify that Manny's bat single-handedly lifted LA from a .500 team into the playoffs and NLCS in 2008.
As to the Sox's defense, yeah they were below average when it came to playing error-free ball but the real killer was that they couldn't make the semi-difficult play.  They were way below average in making non-routine plays which didn't get counted as errors.  That could stem from any number of things - OFers taking the wrong routes to balls, bad foot speed, out of position as if clueless what field that hitter would drive it to, etc.
There were a few notable bumblers of routine plays though - Bonafacio, Gillaspie and Olt.  Olt was the worst of the worst.

There were definitely a few guys who were on their last legs when Kenny snagged them in his win-now pushes:  Manny Ramirez, Andrew Jones, Omar Vizquel, Ken Griffey, Kevin Youklis, Roberto Alomar.

And there are GOOFS who actually thought these brain dead moves were leading the Sox to Glory!!!

A few people who go to games to be CHEERLEADERS for HORSESHIT rather than simply acknowledge what they see on the field.

Must be great to be in 5th Grade for a lifetime of being a PROFESSIONAL FAN!!!
