Sox are apparently close to trading for Brett Lawrie , who will be 26 this year.   16 HR's, .260 Bat Avg. but strikes out an absolute ton and doesn't walk much.   Those kind of peripherals bother a team like the A's but clearly not the White Sox.  No word on the minor leaguers the Sox will send in the deal.  Apparently Billy Beane likes trading with the Sox and probably for good reason.  A year ago he hauled away Semien, (.257 BA, 16 HRs) Phegley (749 OPS and excellent defense) and Chris Bassit (3.56 ERA) for one year of Samardzija.  Yeah, the A's stunk last year too, but at least they've re-tooled and are looking at a good future.

Well, the Sox got Brett Lawrie.  It doesn't seem like they gave up much for him, 2 minor league pitchers - righty J.B. Wendelken and lefty Zack Erwin.  I remember when Lawrie first came up with Toronto in 2011.  He was very highly touted and got off to a fast start, but never really lived up to all the hype since then.  He's still only just 25 years old and can play both 2B and 3B.  I'm a little surprised that the Sox got him without giving up more highly rated prospects.  Does Beane know something that the Sox brass don't?  No doubt.  But on the surface, it looks like a good trade.

IT's pretty much the kind of deal the Sox have to do because Reinsdorf won't spend the money to get a more proven performer like Zobrist.  So it's a case of wishful, hopeful thinking again much like the deal for Avisail Garcia.    A's were banking on his potential but Lawrie took backward steps in defense and plate discipline last year which is why Beane dealt him.  And the Sox didn't exactly give up the ranch for him.  Wendelken might be a decent reliever this coming year, but Erwin is a few years off.
At this point the Sox get a guy who hits 15-20 HR's, bats .260-ish but doesn't get on base enough and plays so-so defense. Still, with a projected low-mid 700's OPS Lawrie is a distinct improvement over the low 600's Sox got from their 3-headed thrid base monster (Gillaspie, Beckham, Saladino) this year.  And at a cost of probably $ 3-4 mil the price is right for Uncle Jer.  Again, the Sox are hoping that Lawrie's rookie season (952 OPS over 170 PA's) will re-surface.  But that is sorta like hoping that Trace Thompson's great 150 PA's this year are what defines him instead of the 2500 minor league PA's where he was a .245 hittter.   What has defined Lawrie for the last 4 years and 1900 PA's is a 717 OPS.
Not exactly what a championship team would hope for in its 3bman.

You mean Thompson ISN'T the next big superstar?

I thought he looked mechanically good at the plate this year, but I guess that's what being hot is all about.

Superstar? No. Workable piece? Could be. Tank, Junior? Hopefully not.

I honestly don't know for what time period he looked mechanically good.  It must have been his first 35 PA's with the Sox where he hit .469.  Because in his last 100 PA's, when the word on him got around the league, he hit .233.  In his last 80 PA's with the Sox  he hit .203.   This is about what can/should be expected of a guy who was a .242 career hitter (3000 PA's) in the minors.   It is absolutely incredible that the Sox would blissfully believe in Thompson's ability to hold down a starting job based almost entirely on a 2 week hot streak , when pitchers were totally unfamiliar with him.  And would overlook the greater body of evidence both after Thompson settled into a starting job and his 3000 minor league PA's that scream out "STIFF" in big, bold letters.

Last year the Sox won the Offseason.  This year they lost.

    Bottom Line.....they SUCK.

You better get to Spring Training in "Glensdale" with the Fanboys, Marty.

The Sox will have Spring Training in their new home of Havana soon!!!

Or Charlotte.  Charlotte will train in Florida.

Those Olive Garden trips are now to be cherished.

Hey, Bobby, White Sox baseball and Olive Garden go together!
It's an ideal place to "hash" over the latest moves.  And the unlimited "stiff" breadsticks keep on comin'.

Danks and LaRoche will be in the last year of their contracts next season.  That should free up some money to bring in some new stiffs for 2017.
