    Tony Campana

Post by MGJOHNSON on Fri Nov 28, 2014 11:20 am

It looks like the Sox have signed OF Tony Campana to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training.  He's got blazing speed; and as Captain Obvious might say, he would be an upgrade over Jordan Danks.

Huge!!!  Plus an ex-Cub.  This is a CHARLOTTE player.  Just like Taylor.  Just like Mitchell.

Well true but Captain Obvious would have to take you to school over it first and explain statistically to you something you already knew without the numbers.

While a ton of players might be upgrades over Jordan Danks, I don't think Campana is one of them.  At least Danks has a little bit of power - Campana has a grand total of 2 HR's in 2200 minor league PA's and he doesn't get on base enough to use his speed.  Plus his caught stealing % this last year in the minors suggests he might be losing a step.  With Campana turning 29 next year, he best be thinking about his next career.

Let him play for the Sox for a few days before we start naming him manager for crying out loud! I mean, how is this fair to guys like Tony Graffanino?

This may be true if Campana and Danks were fighting over the LF job.

    But they are not.

Campana is a very good #5 OF. These type of players can't hit, but can give either grade A speed and or defense.

Campana is the guy that can give you a steall off the bench. That's a heck of a lot more valuable than the 13th reliever.

Its a good move and Campana can help any MLB team if confined to a #5OF role.

A well defined bench is. Good thing to have

The way bullpens are being used today, there aren't many "5th Ofers" anymore.

And thats a problem. Give a Campana who can steal a couple of bases of the bench a week instead of a 13th pitcher that may be needed if you have to change pitchers for the 4th time in the 8th inning.

Relievers are like govt spending. At least 15% of it is completely useless and can be gotten rid without anybody even noticing. Anybody miss Septimo and Omagrasso?!?!?!?!?
