At this point, the Sox don't have anyone ready to take over at 2b. The same may be true for 2015 if neither Semien or Johnson is ready. So there is no urgency to deal Beckham now unless a good offer comes along. By the same token, why extend him into 2016 and beyond when a) either Semien or Johnson might be ready to take over by 2016 and b) Beckham has basically been a subpar 2bman for the last 4 years. His glove is better than average but not so spectacular that it offsets his shitty offense.. Giving Beckham a 4 year $ 35 million deal now would be a typical Kenny Williams move. Why not give it this year to see if Beckham can hit over a whole season. He was hitting over .300 for a while last year, but didn't finish so hot. See what Semien and Johnson do for the rest of the year. Then decide what to do.

If the Sox were devoid of 2b prospects or if Beckham were in the Cano/Pedroia category of 2bmen, then hell yes, extend him into 2018-2019. Since neither of those conditions are true, then why not take the rest of 2014 and even the first half of 2015 to see whether Beckham and the prospects go forward, backward or sideways ? I agree, however, that Beckham should not be unloaded now for a couple cartons of CheezWhiz.
