    The guy who kicked off Woodstock. Dead of a heart attack at 72.

    Most of the opening acts at Woodstock were late because of the obvious transportation problems. Richie was scheduled to go on like 5th that day. Instead he was asked to do what he could to placate the crowd and buy some time. According to him he did about every song in his bag. The song that made the opening of the movie was an improvisation he did which he called "Freedom"...made it up on the spot. The guy played so hard that day that he actually wore a groove into his acoustic guitar.

    the obit in the Trib spoke of that being covered in one of the books on Woodstock. Said hte FREE dom chant morphed into a version of "sometimes I feel like a motherless child" which his mother always sang to him
